Ah yes that famous fake TV ad from the first Ghostbusters movie is the first thing you see when starting a new career on the new Ghostbusters game, released on the PS3, PS2, PSP, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and Wii. It was released in 2009 being published by Atari. Terminal Reality developed the PS3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows versions of the games while the Wii version by Zen Studios, and the PSP, PS2, And DS versions by Red Fly Studios. This review will be covering the PS3 version of the game, as it is the one that I personally own.
If your like me and have been gaming since the 80’s this is the Ghostbusters game we’ve been waiting for. After numerous titles on the Atari 2600, Nintendo NES, Sega master System, and other platforms of the day, that SUCKED ASS, Ghostbusters dropped of the radar and laid dormant until the 2009 release of Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters is third person shooter where you take control as a new recruit affectionately known as the rookie. The game is pretty straightforward save New York from the apocalypse. One aspect that I really liked is that instead of just your normal proton stream you also have different weapons such as the Shock Blast, Slime Blower, and Meson Collider as well as each has an alternate fire. Different enemies are weak to different weapons. You can scan each new ghost you encounter with your handy PKE Meter and Goggles and learn its weakness as well as other facts about that ghost.
Now I don’t want to really reveal the plot at all and spoil it for anyone, but the game plays like a movie. You travel all over New York with cut scenes between each level, and I think if feels like the Ghostbusters move we never got (although we are supposed to get Ghostbusters 3 in 2012). Now I gotta go finish playing the game but if you loved the movie and as a child pretended to be a Ghostbuster with your toy proton pack, trap and PKE Meter, (like me) this game is the closest thing your gonna get to being a real Ghostbuster. I highly recommend it, go out and buy it, $20 never bought you such awesomeness.
P.S. The game also has a multiplayer mode that I have not gotten to check out yet due to the PSN Shit-Storm but I’ll update this after I finish the game and PSN is restored.
